Rapide-Danseur's church

Description

Located on the banks of the Duparquet River, where the waters rush through a narrow rocky passage, the beautiful fieldstone church built in 1940 stands proudly at the heart of the village.

Constructed by early settlers using local stones, the baroque-style church rises where the calm river transforms into dramatic cascades.

On August 12, 1985, it was officially designated as a historic site.

According to Indigenous oral history, this place was a stopover during portages—an opportunity to stretch one's legs, and sometimes, to dance in joy.

Once the rapids were crossed, the river resumed its calm journey toward Lake Abitibi, a vast inland sea and a paradise for anglers.

Inside the church, visitors can purchase handcrafted items made by local artisans.

On the upper floor, a unique exhibition showcases antique religious artifacts, offering a glimpse into the region’s spiritual heritage.
